As the world attempts to understand new demands, challenges will emerge for the mining industry. The increasing need for electric transport, the use of renewable energy and the storage of electrical energy results in an increased need for battery minerals.
The Finnish Mining Act was recently reformed. The amendments came into force on 1 June 2023.
The amendments aim, for example, to:
- Improve local residents’ opportunities to exert influence and obtain information;
- Give local communities more decision-making power;
- Prevent unnecessarily large reservations;
- Give more consideration to other sources of livelihood and local businesses, including the rights of the Sámi, and environmental aspects;
- Clarify and tighten the regulations on securities; and
- Strengthen national security.
In addition to these aims, the article discusses the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Management Act (CRMA) and the Finnish government’s goals related to sustainable development and recycling.
